MFI was for decades probably the leading kitchen retailer in the UK. After acquiring Hygena and Schreiber, it made most of its own kitchens, and, in 1995, it created Howdens. In 2006, the company split, Howdens retaining the factories, and MFI the showrooms. Over the next two years, MFI kitchens were re-sourced elsewhere, most specifications remaining the same; in 2008, MFI closed.
Hygena kitchens were flat-packed, Schreiber rigid. Today’s Hygena and Schreiber kitchens at Homebase are un-related, as is the MFI on-line business (without kitchens) operated by Victoria Plumb; but most MFI specifications survive at Howdens.
